The Marriott Ranch Bed & Breakfast

The Marriott Ranch Bed & Breakfast, a great option for a weekend getaway in Virginia.
A private retreat for the Marriott family can be yours too!

Nestled in the rolling Blue Ridge foothills, just 60 miles west of DC, is The Marriott Ranch Bed & Breakfast. It’s not just a ranch, though. It’s a cozy bed-and-breakfast and a fantastic event site.
Back in 1951, the founder of Marriott International, J. Willard Marriott Sr., stumbled upon this stunning land. It reminded him of his childhood on his family farm in Utah, so he couldn’t resist buying it.

With attention to detail, he began restoring the historic buildings and grounds. At the heart of the Marriott Ranch sits the historic 1814 James Marshall Manor House.

It’s the centerpiece of the charming Inn. You won’t get bored with twelve cozy bedrooms, afternoon beverage service, delicious three-course breakfasts, and 4200 acres to explore.

While the ranch remains a special retreat for the Marriott family, friends, and associates, they also welcome visitors. The vast working cattle ranch, with over 1,200 head of cattle, provides a unique and stunning backdrop.

So, if you’re looking for a peaceful and romantic Virginia weekend getaway at a bed-and-breakfast, the Marriott Ranch is a lovely retreat. We love the beauty, tranquility, and hospitality.

Horseback riding, wine tastings, and hiking are just a few activities to make this an outstanding weekend getaway in Virginia for couples.

Nearby wineries include Linden Vineyards, Philip Carter Winery, Chester Gap Cellars, and Rappahannock Cellars.

The Inn at MeadowCroft

The Inn at MeadowCroft, a mid-1700s historic farm, is a true testament to the enduring spirit of agriculture and the land.
Enjoy history and luxury at the Inn at MeadowCroft Farm.

Nestled in the pretty rural community of Swoope, just outside Staunton, lies MeadowCroft Farm—a working family farm that has stood the test of time for an impressive seven generations.

With its roots tracing back to the mid-1700s, this historic farm, now owned by Bill and Judie Croft, is a true testament to the enduring spirit of agriculture and the land.

Just a short five-mile drive from the Staunton bypass, where Interstate I-81 and I-64 intersect, MeadowCroft Farm enjoys a prime location in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Its sprawling acres are home to beef cattle and sheep and cultivating crops like corn and fescue for hay.

The Pickle Factory

In 1998, the farm welcomed an exciting addition called “The Pickle Factory.” Today, MeadowCroft Farm’s brand, Heirloom Pickles – Relishes – Fruit Jams – Pepper Jellies and Salsas, boasts over 60 all-natural products distributed throughout the US. All I can say is, YUM.

In 2013, Bill and Judie restored an 1820 two-story log cabin. As the renovations began, fate intervened, leading the couple to acquire a remarkable 1795 two-story log cabin with a vision of creating a charming bed and breakfast.

With meticulous care, they disassembled the original log cabin, preserving its historical significance, and carefully transported it to Swoope. In 2018, after years of dedicated work, the restoration and updates to the adjoining cabins were completed, giving birth to the magnificent Inn at MeadowCroft.

This exquisite retreat lets you immerse yourself in a bygone era. Each room in the inn honors the rich history of the local area. This farm is a living testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring beauty of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. This place is where the past intertwines seamlessly with the present—and history comes alive.

The farm is fantastic if you’re looking for a romantic retreat close to everything Staunton offers, like great restaurants, bars, hiking trails, and shopping. Wine tastings in the area include Ox-eye Vineyards, Yelping Dog Wine, and Above Ground Winery.

Beach Weekend Getaways in Virginia that Won’t Break the Bank

In Hampton Roads

Pier in the water near the beach.
The Virginia Peninsula has beautiful, calm beaches that are affordable.

Let’s talk about the beautiful beaches on the Virginia Peninsula, including those at Buckroe, Fort Monroe, and Yorktown. Whether you’re a local resident or a visitor, these beaches offer a wonderful seaside escape with their scenic beauty, recreational activities, and family-friendly fun that won’t break the bank.

Buckroe and Fort Monroe Beaches

Let’s start with Buckroe Beach and Fort Monroe Beach, located in Hampton. Buckroe Beach is a local favorite and offers a nice, broad stretch of sandy shoreline along the Chesapeake Bay. The beach is well-maintained and features a lifeguarded swimming area, a playground, and a fishing pier. The calm waters make it an ideal spot for families with children or those looking for a relaxing swim.

Adjacent to Buckroe Beach is Fort Monroe Beach, which holds historical significance as it is part of Fort Monroe, a former military installation. This beach offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historic charm. Visitors can explore the fort’s grounds and learn about its role in American history while enjoying the sun and sand.

Both Buckroe Beach and Fort Monroe Beach provide nice amenities. They offer clean restroom facilities, picnic areas with grills, and shaded pavilions where you can relax and enjoy a meal with family and friends. The beaches also have free, ample parking.

Great places to catch a bite or a drink near both Buckroe and Ft. Monroe Beaches are Mama Rosa’s, The Dead Rise, Firehouse Coffee, Oozlefinch Beers & Blending, Sly Clyde Ciderworks, Mango Mageuax, and Fuller’s Raw Bar.

There’s an abundance of moderately priced hotels, motels, and Airbnbs in the area. And if you want to head down to Virginia Beach for a few hours, it’s not that far–providing the bridge/tunnel isn’t a mess. Always check traffic before you go.

Yorktown Beach

Moving on to Yorktown Beach, located in historic Yorktown. This beach offers a picturesque waterfront experience. Yorktown Beach showcases stunning views of the town and the York River. The beach features a large sandy shoreline and gentle waters, making it a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing.

Yorktown Beach is known for its scenic boardwalk, which stretches along the riverfront and provides a pleasant place to stroll and enjoy the views. The beach area is equipped with picnic tables, benches, and a gazebo, offering plenty of options for relaxation and enjoying a picnic by the water.

One of the notable aspects of Yorktown Beach is its proximity to the historic Yorktown Battlefield, where the decisive Battle of Yorktown took place during the American Revolutionary War. This makes it an excellent destination for history enthusiasts who can combine a beach visit with a trip to this important American site.

The Yorktown Beach Hotel (formerly Duke of York) sits right on the beach and is a cute spot with a nice pool. The rooms are very decent and sit right in the historic district’s heart. My kids loved this hotel. And it’s much less expensive than a hotel in Virginia Beach.

Colonial Beach

Colonial Beach, its not just a beach, its a great town to visit for the weekend.
Colonial Beach is favorite for those in NOVA.

Let’s dive into delightful Colonial Beach, the “Playground on the Potomac.” Colonial Beach offers a coastal escape and beach experience filled with relaxation, fun, and a touch of small-town charm.

Located along the Potomac River in Westmoreland County, Colonial Beach has a lovely stretch of sandy shoreline that stretches for miles. The well-maintained beach offers a pristine setting for sunbathing, picnicking, and leisurely strolls. The gentle waters of the Potomac River make it a safe and inviting spot for swimming, kayaking, and other water sports.

Colonial Beach is renowned for its laid-back and friendly atmosphere. The locals are welcoming, and the beach exudes a sense of community and Southern hospitality. This creates a warm and inviting environment for visitors, making it easy to feel right at home.

One of the highlights of Colonial Beach is the town’s Main Street, which is lined with adorable shops, restaurants, and galleries. Additionally, the town hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, showcasing live music, arts and crafts, and delicious food, further enhancing the vibrant atmosphere.

The beach offers ample, low-cost parking. Additionally, the beach has picnic areas, grills, shaded pavilions, restrooms, and showers.

Some great places near the beach where you can grab a drink or meal are the Dockside Restaurant & Tiki Bar, Wilkerson’s Seafood Restaurant, or High Tides on The Potomac.

There are several moderately priced hotels and motels in the area.

The Eastern Shore

Two green Adirondack chairs sit in a deck in the foreground while people gather on the beach beyond on a sunny day.
The Eastern Shore has some great getaways including quite a few beaches.

Virginia’s Eastern Shore is an absolute gem for beachgoers who want to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea without breaking the bank. You’ll find plenty of moderately priced hotels, motels, and restaurants all along the eastern shore.

Cape Charles

One popular destination is Cape Charles, a historic and beautiful coastal town with a wide, white sand beach. Its calm waters and wide sandy shores are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, or exercising.

The beach is within walking distance from the historic downtown with free parking. Accommodations can be pricey in-season in the area, but plenty of moderately priced hotels and campgrounds are nearby.

Chincoteague Island

Chincoteague Island, famous for its wild ponies, offers stunning beaches ideal for families and nature lovers. The sandy expanses of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore provide ample opportunities for relaxation and wildlife sightings.

Chincoteague has many moderately priced hotels and motels, although they will be more expensive on weekends and holidays in-season–but still less expensive than Virginia Beach or Outer Banks.

Sunset Beach Resort

Another budget-friendly weekend getaway in Virginia is Sunset Beach Resort near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. It offers stunning sunset views, gentle waves, and a laid-back atmosphere, making it ideal for a tranquil beach experience.

You can expect higher prices in-season, but we think it’s a great value with free parking, a private beach, a swimming pool, and a great location. Try the shoulder seasons of May, September, and October for the best prices. The water is still warm.

Parks

Additionally, several state parks along the Eastern Shore, such as Kiptopeke State Park and Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, offer affordable access to beaches and recreational activities for visitors of all ages.

So, if you’re looking for an affordable beach getaway, the Eastern Shore of Virginia offers plenty.

Luggage Service

No matter where you fly into Virginia, before heading to your getaway destination you may need a place to store your luggage before you can check into your hotel, or after you check out of your hotel well before your plane is scheduled to depart. One excellent option I love is a luggage storage service. And there’s no better service than Radical Storage which offers you freedom and peace of mind for as little as $6 a day.

Just find the closest location, book online, store your luggage, and go!

That’s it, Folks!

Those were some of our favorite weekend getaways in Virginia. Let me know if you have any to add!
